... yet will I trust Him!
And the L-RD said to Satan,
"Have you considered My servant Job,
that there is no one like him on the earth,
a perfect and upright man, one who reveres G-D
and turns away from bad?"
H ave we ever considered Job?
I am pretty sure that for many of us, the answer to that question is a loud and resounding 'yes.' I for one can recall a time in my life 20 years ago where I found great comfort from the life of Job ... here was a man who lost everything but also one who would come to be GREATLY restored ... BEYOND IMAGINATION!!! The L-RD blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning! even giving him TWICE AS MUCH as he had before! A man who went through such trials and tribulations ... a man whom G-D Himself releases to haSatan, but only so far and no further... "All that he has is in your power, only do not put forth your hand upon him himself." And yet ... Job was able to say in the midst of all his pain and turmoil ...
"Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him."
But even before this, look at what Job does upon hearing of the destruction of his house ... in chapter 1:20 we read "Then Job rose and tore his cloak and shaved his head and fell down upon the ground and worshipped!" It really is quite something when we stop to really consider the life of Job!!! I am already seeing things within its first few pages that I never truly saw before ... and I am left feeling like what I thought I read before I didn't truly see it ... do you know what I mean?
But ... can I please tell you something? Do you want to know what my heart found? It is so beautiful!! The words Job spoke after this ... they hit me so hard when I read it, as it reminded me of David's own heart found in Psalm 51:11 when he says, "Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me." Job was "pleading his case" before Adonai ... even saying, "if now I hold my tongue, I perish!" But then he says these words ... can we not hear a bit of an echo of David's heart in Job chapter 13:20-21 when he says, "Only two things do not do to me, then I will not hide myself from You: withdraw Your hand far from me, and let not the dread of You make me afraid." My heart became overwhelmed in reading those words ... melting like wax once again before Hashem! In the midst of all Job was experiencing, it seems his main concern is that he does not lose G-D ... interesting though that he uses the word "dread" which means "terror" or "horror." Also interesting that he asks G-D not to withdraw His hand from him. Could it be that Job knew G-D to the extent of knowing He was the provider of all things he possessed ... but yet in his heart, he was terrified of the very same One who was faithful in providing for him? Did G-D truly "possess" the heart of Job? Or was it Job's possessions? And that was the question HaSatan was bringing before HaShem! Was Job just going through the motions? I don't know ... I am just thinking out loud ... but ... I think I will have to dig a bit deeper on that one ... what I thought was going to be a simple and straight forward entry today has already proven to hold more twists and turns than I expected ... my head is spinning with more questions than answers ... and I have not even made it past chapter 2!!! ; )
So ... through these twists and turns, you are welcome to come on this journey of discovery with me ... let's see where we get to ...
C an we imagine just how cruel Satan's attack was upon Job ... I was amazed to realise that Job's name actually means "hated" in the sense of persecuted; its root meaning being "to treat one as a foe or an enemy - to hate." Do we realise just how much HaSatan is the enemy of HaShem and just how much he hates to see those who are determined to turn away from evil and run after G-D with everything they have ... as if their very lives depended on it! And this is what I have been pondering ... and can I just interrupt long enough to say ... I don't profess to have all the answers when I write, but it is simply my heart expressing as I journey along with you ... and you are always welcome and free to respond. Are we not journeying and learning together? So ... this is what has been swirling around my thought processes ...
Is it not when we find Him ... is it not in that place where we discover WHO HE REALLY IS ... WHO WE REALLY ARE IN HIM ... is it not in that time when we discover our True G-D given identity and our G-D given place in this world - a sense of purpose and destiny - and is it not in that place where we actually begin to walk into the fullness of all those things combined ... that we suddenly discover that in that very same place - that time and space - we actually become a very real and powerful threat to G-D's enemy!
FOR SUCH A TIME AS THIS!
Believe me when I tell you, it is no exaggeration when I say that John 10:10 is a reality beyond what many often recognise ... "The thief only comes to steal, to kill, and to destroy!" And he comes in many different guises, shapes and sizes so to speak! Of course, the opposite of that is the Truth, the Way and the Life that is found in just ONE NAME ONLY ... who is Yeshua HaMashiach! He came that we may have life ... AND HAVE IT IN ABUNDANCE!!! You see, our enemy's goal is to "take no prisoners" ... in other words, his ultimate goal is "death & destruction" to G-D's people! And that can manifest itself in a whole magnitude of ways. Where he is given rights that continue to go unchecked, if I can liken it to an addict ... he can then subtly become like one who looks for the next hit ... 1 Peter 5:8 ... but then has to look for something stronger to satisfy ... but enough is never enough ... he is after blood so to speak ... but we can be found safe and sound when the blood of the Lamb has been applied to the doorposts and the lintel of our hearts. Where the enemy holds rights to move within our lives, if it goes undetected and unchecked ... he will continue his attempt to steal, he will then move on with attempt to kill; if he gets away with killing, he will then move on to attempt complete destruction ... THAT is his goal! And it often begins with an attack on one's personal character with an attempt at stealing one's G-D given identity. If we look closely, we can see that template outworking through all that happened with Hitler and the Holocaust ... he began by attacking the character of the Jewish people, I would go as far as to say he was attacking G-D Himself through the attack on His people, attempting to strip them of their G-D given identity (STEALING)! What is one of the worst ways to hurt a parent's heart? To harm the children! Hitler then moved on to the execution process (KILLING) ... his ultimate goal was total destruction (DESTROY) ... and he got closer than probably anyone at that time could have anticipated. Now look once again at Job ... HaSatan comes and questions Job's character ... and with G-D's permission, he unleashes a torrent of things against Job with one exception ... he could not touch Job himself or take his life. The enemy has been trying to destroy what G-D created since the beginning of time ... that is nothing new ... BUT ...
Glory be to G-D who says "this far and no further!" GREAT I AM who IS the same today as yesterday and will forever BE! The very same One who spoke His promise to Abraham ... the very same One who brought forth the promise in Isaac ... the very same One who brought forth the nation of Israel through Ya'akov!!! In a world where there are so many broken promises, a world where there is no real security in anything, where people's words can often mean very little if anything at all, where actions and words are continually in conflict with each other ... where we can suddenly find that NOTHING matches up and we can find ourselves greatly puzzled and dumb-founded ... we can take comfort in the knowledge that there is One who remains Sure and Secure ... and in Whom we can find Trust beyond measure when we look to Him and hear Him say "When I make a promise ... I KEEP IT!!! Where HaShem is concerned, "A Promise is a Promise and it cannot be broken!" Because THAT is WHO HE IS!!
Listen up WE WHO ARE G-D's people!! WE WHO ARE ISRAEL and ALL who are grafted in ... KNOW THIS THIS DAY ... "We may have known the reality of being accused ... of having our very character questioned ... of having life stolen from us in various circumstances ... of those we love having turned away from the G-D we know is Faithful, even to the point of saying "curse G-D and die!" ... of having well-intended friends and colleagues question our walk ... of having lost everything we once knew and held dear ... we may have even felt the reality of hatred and persecution ... even the threat of death ... BUT KNOW THIS ... OUR G-D, the G-D of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob IS A GREAT BIG G-D ... and His word WILL NOT return to Him void!
GREAT I AM!!!
HE IS G-D OF THE IMPOSSIBLE ... DID HE NOT PART THE WATERS?! DID HE NOT MAKE A WAY WHERE THERE SEEMED NO WAY? DID HE NOT PERFORM MANY SIGNS AND WONDERS IN THE MIDST OF HIS PEOPLE FROM GENERATION TO GENERATION?! YOU SEE ... WE MAY LOSE EVERYTHING ... DEATH AND DESTRUCTION MAY BE ALL AROUND US ... BUT WE WHO REMAIN IN HIM WILL NEVER BE DESTROYED!
BECAUSE HE PROMISED!
But ... let us get back to Job ... remembering that I tend to take the more scenic route when journeying ... so bear with me ... ; )
The scriptures tell us that HaSatan struck Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot to his crown ... in other words, from the top of his head to the tips of his toes! Can we even begin to imagine?! Not only was Job suffering the loss and all the inner pain he must have been going through, but now he has the physical pain to go with it ... I wonder if he wished he could take that same potsherd that he scraped his body with and use it to scrape away the pain that was going on deep within him? Can we imagine the torment and the agony he must have felt ... from the inside out!?
And if that wasn't enough, his very own wife - no doubt also in great pain, says to him, "Do you still retain your integrity? Curse G-D and die." Would it have been an easy thing for Job to be tempted to agree with his wife? And yet, listen to his response ... "You speak as one of the foolish women speaks. What? Will we accept good at the hand of G-D and will we not accept bad? With all this Job did not sin with his lips."
And we can all read for ourselves the journey that Job had to face in order to find HaShem at the other side. I for one will be reading the entire book in the next few days; there is one thing that has got me thinking ... at the beginning of the book, we are told that Job "was honest, unsophisticated, and upright, and one that revered G-D and turned aside from evil." Even HaShem Himself says "there is no one like him on the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one who reveres G-D and turns away from bad." Now that word 'perfect' means "whole" or "complete" and also makes reference to "one being undefiled." And yet at the back of the book we see Job repenting in dust and ashes! And it got me thinking ... "L-RD, what exactly is Job repenting of" ... it is interesting that in Job's response to G-D, he makes mention of this thing: "no thought can be withheld from You. Who is the one who hides counsel without knowledge?" And it got me thinking some more ... and it lead me straight back to the beginning of the book when the scriptures tell us that "when the days of their feasting were going on (referring to his children), that Job sent and sanctified them and rose up early in the morning, offering burnt offerings according to the number of them all, for Job said, it may be that my sons have sinned and cursed G-D in their hearts." It says that Job did this continually. And it has literally just lead me to the beginning of this entry ... Job says
"I will not hide myself from You!"
Ahaaaaa ... could THAT possibly be the key ... if Job did not sin with his lips ... then perhaps it was a heart issue! Let us look at one of my favorite passages from 20 years ago which still remains today ... the power of Job's words in chapter 42:5 ...
"I have heard of You by the listening of the ear, but
now my eye sees You."
That one little statement holds such BIG impact! Notice that the words "ear" and "eye" have no 's' at the end ... this suggests to me that we are not dealing with the natural ears or eyes ... BUT THE HEART! It suggests that something within Job - although he was a righteous man who turned from evil ... one who knew ABOUT G-D - was missing the reality that comes with actually knowing and experiencing Him. Perhaps we could say he had head knowledge but without a heart connection? And it took for him to go through the reality of very painful circumstances in order for that bridge between the head and heart to be built ... for him to finally SEE just WHO HaShem IS and WAS and ALWAYS will be! Holy G-D ... All powerful ... Creator of Heaven and Earth ...
GOD OF WONDER!!!
"Abba Father ... we thank You for WHO YOU ARE! Please meet with us today and in the days to come in ways most unexpected. May we be a people - Your people - who are not simply going through the motions, or relying on our own understanding or earthly possessions, or doing all the right things at the right times and in the right places without actually knowing You ... Abba Father, through Yeshua HaMashiach, I pray - please let us TRULY know You for who You are ... that our eye may see You in a new and fresh way ... that our ear will hear Your voice whisper to our hearts ... not simply what we want to hear - not twisted truths but the Truth that You long to bring to our hearts and our spirits ... the Truth that will set us free from the inside out! Will You whisper gently to us as Your children what Your heart knows our hearts MUST hear ... that we would be a people who worship You in Spirit and in Truth ... We bow down before You and cry "Blessed are You, L-RD our G-D, King of the Universe, Creator of Heaven and Earth ... " We love You and adore You ... but help us to move that love in our hearts to obedient action with our feet ... in Yeshua's name I pray ... Amen."
